How to check
browser history
Browser history is usually retained by
default in most browsers for 20 to 30 days. The type of
records kept may not be proof in itself but can often give
an oversight of the users internet activity and give some
clues as to where to look next.
If you are unfamiliar with how this is
done you can easily check the browser history by following
these steps.
Warning
By accessing or
making changes to your partners internet browser
settings
you risk alerting
them to your activities.
Use the methods
described here only if you are confident in your ability
to carry them out discreetly.
Otherwise, use a
covert monitoring program to obtain the
evidence you are looking for
safely.

To check browser
history in Mozilla firefox:
-
Open the
Mozilla firefox application.
-
In the top
left hand corner, just below the page title click the
‘History’ tab on the task bar.
-
In the drop
down box, click ‘Show all history’
-
A new window
entitled ‘Library’ will open showing details of all sites
visited and pages bookmarked. You can visit these sites
simply by clicking on the link in the main
window.
-
If you are
looking for evidence of
visits to a particular
website you can also use the search box on the task bar at
the top right hand corner of the
window.
If , after taking these steps you discover
that no browsing history has been recorded it may be that
the user has used the ‘Clear private data’ button on the
options menu or that they have set the browser to clear all
browsing history as soon as the browser is
closed.
A useful trick is to reset these options
without the knowledge of your partner as it is unlikely that
they will suspect any changes have been made and so, will
unwittingly record their history the next time they use the
computer.
You can then simply follow the steps 1-5
above to check the browser history again and to monitor
their activity over a period of time.
To reset the browser to
record private data in Mozilla
Firefox:
-
Open the
browser and on the main
task bar below the page title
click ‘Tools’
-
In the drop
down box click ‘Options’
-
A new window
entitled ‘Options’ will open
-
On the main
task bar below the title click
‘Privacy’
-
In the box
marked ‘History’ check the box ‘Keep my history for at
least’ and set to 90 days. Check the other two options in
this box also.
-
In the box
marked ‘Privacy’ make sure
you uncheck
the two options ‘
Always clear my private data when I close firefox’
and ‘Ask before clearing private
data.
The browser is now set to record all web
pages visited.
Another option is to set the browser to
remember passwords entered on a wesite that requires login.
The problem with this is that it may tip the user off that
the settings have been changed as the password will be
automatically entered when the user types their user name,
and so, will make ongoing monitoring impossible. It will
however, allow you a once off opportunity to gain access to
a login page immediately before the user next logs into the
same page.
To save password
information in Mozilla Firefox:
-
Click ‘Tools’
then ‘options'.
-
In the
‘Passwords’ box check the option ‘Remember
passwords’
-
Click ‘Okay’
and close the browser.
The techniques described above may or may
not be successful in finding the information you are looking
for or it may find some but not all of the evidence you
need.
For example, it will give an indication of
the type of activity you partner engages in on the internet
but generally speaking, it will not record specific details
of conversations or information exchanged in forums or
chatrooms.
If you need to record more in-depth
information the simplest and most effective way is to
install a keystroke analyser which will operate completely
covertly in the background while
recording
keyboard and mouse activity
and also providing screenshots at timed intervals. The
benefit of this is that it saves a lot of time and effort
and the evidence it uncovers is
indisputable.
To check browser
history in
Internet
Explorer:
-
Open the Internet Explorer web browser.
-
On the main task bar click ‘Tools’ then click ‘Internet
options’.
-
In the middle box marked ‘Temporary internet files’ click
‘Settings’ then click ‘View files’
This will open a new window in
which you can view a list of all files, web pages and images
viewed on the browser.
If
the history folder is empty the browser may be set so as not
to record any browsing history. You can reset this by
returning to the ‘Internet options’ window and setting the
history tab to retain browsing history for a maximum of 99
days.
Try re-setting this and re-checking the
browser history after a period of use.
Again, the
browsing history may not give you definitive evidence but may
help to point you in the direction of where to look
further.
